Zinc die casting is a precision casting method that uses high pressure to force molten zinc metal into a complex shaped metal mold. Zinc die casting produces various parts and components in numerous industrial applications. Zinc is one of the most versatile die casting metals. Zinc die castings have better mechanical properties than sand castings of grey iron, brass and aluminum at average temperatures, especially toughness and impact strength. And also offer higher accuracy and lower machining costs and is the easiest to cast.

1. Specific gravity, weight, texture, and strength than plastic injection moulding.
2. Good casting performance, can die-casting complex shapes, thin-walled precision parts, casting surface smooth.
3. Surface treatment: electroplating, spraying, painting.
4. No iron absorption when melting and die-casting, no corrosion of the compression mold, no sticky mold.
5. Have perfect room temperature mechanical properties and wear resistance. 6.
6. Low melting point, melting at 385℃, easier to shape than aluminum alloy die casting
7. Zinc alloy is three-dimensional. The surface will have granularity or wrinkles after die-casting and needs to be polished. Polishing can not wholly change the physical form.
8. Zinc alloy crafts and embossed patterns are vivid and widely used but need a higher level of craftsmanship. There will be a small amount of indentation or burr on the surface.

Zinc Alloy Material Options

At V1, we can die cast zinc Zamak #2, #3, #5, #7, ZA8 and ZA27, all offering the ability to cast intricate details and tight dimensional tolerances at high production rates.
Zinc die casting material options include
Zamak2: for mechanical parts with special requirements for mechanical properties, high hardness requirements, and average dimensional accuracy requirements.
Zamak3: Good flowability and mechanical properties. It is applied to castings with low requirements for mechanical strength, such as toys, lamps, decorations, and some electrical parts. When considering zinc die casting, this zinc alloy is usually preferred.
Zamak5: Good fluidity and good mechanical properties. Used in castings with specific requirements for mechanical strength, such as auto parts, electromechanical parts, mechanical parts, and electrical components.
ZA8: Good fluidity and dimensional stability, but poor fluidity. Used in die-casting workpieces with small size and high requirements for precision and mechanical strength, such as electrical parts.
Superloy: best fluidity, applied to die-casting thin-walled, large size, high precision and complex shape workpieces, such as electrical components and their box bodies. Different zinc alloys have different physical and mechanical properties, which provides a choice for die casting design.

Application range of zinc alloy materials

Zamak2 is the hardest and most potent of the various zinc alloys. Its copper content (3%) provides good resistance to creep (deformation at high temperatures under stress) and wear. Zinc alloy Zamak2 is used for gravity castings, such as for making metal moulds or injection moulded tools.
Zamak3 has long-lasting stability in castability and dimensions, making more than 70% of zinc die-casting products made with zinc alloy. Zamak 3 is used for surface treatment such as electroplating, painting and chroming. The products are widely used in mechanical parts such as automobiles, motorcycles, electronic communications, meters, etc., as well as toys, ornaments, tableware, locks and other high-grade hardware devices.
Zamak5 has higher hardness and strength than zinc alloy Zamak3. The change in characteristics of Zamak5 is due to the addition of 1% copper, which makes this alloy excellent for casting and better for creep resistance (deformation at high temperatures and heat) than zinc alloy No. 3. It is suitable for plating, cutting and general surface treatment for sports equipment and industrial parts.
ZA8 is commonly used for high-pressure casting. It has higher hardness, strength and creeps resistance (deformation at high temperatures) than Zamak3 and Zamak5. ZA8 is also suitable for electroplating and other surface treatments, with the same processes as Zamak 5. It is mainly used for decorative materials.

How to choose zinc die casting alloy?

When choosing a zinc alloy die casting alloy, you must also consider whether the comprehensive performance of the alloy itself can meet the requirements for the use of die casting. It generally should be considered from the following aspects.
(1) The state of force. Mainly consider the die casting in use when the working conditions, such as tension, pressure, vibration, impact and other load conditions.
(2) Working environment. Mainly consider the die casting in use on the temperature, confinement requirements, and the medium in contact with such as humid atmosphere, seawater, acid, alkali, salt and other erosion resistance.
(3) Production conditions. Should consider whether the equipment, process settings and materials in the production of die castings match.
(4) Economy. Conduct costing to minimize the cost.
